Nuestra graduación de UCM

¡Lo hemos hecho! Hoy es el día.  Nos graduamos de las clases superiores de La Universidad de Complutense.  Decidí tomar una mezcla de las clases de enseñanza y de literatura.  He aprendido un montón.  Pienso también que mi español ha mejorado.  La ceremona fue en la facultad de filología.  Fue corta pero muy linda.  Ver a todos recibir sus diplomas me ha hecho pensar sobre la importancia de estudiar en el extranjero.  Pienso que Dr. Ruiz la ha dicho mejor que aprender un idioma cambia la personalidad de una persona pero estudiar en el extranjero la intensifica.  No somos las mismas personas cuando venimos.  La cultura española y la gente me han cambiado para el mejor.

We did it! Today is the day.  We graduated from our graduate level classes at the University of Complutense.  I decided take a mixture of teaching and literature classes and I have learned a ton.  I think my Spanish has also improved.  The ceremony was in the department of  philology building.  It was short but very nice.  Watching everyone receive their diplomas has made me think about the importance of study abroad.  I think Dr. Ruiz has said it best.  Learning a language changes a personality but living in a culture intensifies this change.  A person is not who they were when they came here.  I can definitely say Spain has changed me for the better.

Ahora que mi tiempo en España va a acabar, quiero reflejar de mis memorias favoritas en el país.  Las mencionaré sin un orden particular.

Now that my time in Spain is about to come to an end, I want to reflect on my favorite memories in this amazing country.  I will mention them in no particular order.

1. El metro: 100 años de edad este año y es el sistema más eficaz y fácil para usar.   Me habría perdido sin ello.

 The metro: 100 years old and the easiest and most efficient to use.  I would have been lost without it.

2.  Dr. Ruíz: El director de MLSA y un hombre muy gracioso y humilde.  Es joven para su edad y llena de ánimo.  Ha habido más de 20.000 estudiantes que han estudiado aquí en España por él.  Gracias Dr. Ruíz por haberme ayudado mi sueño de estudiar en España una realidad.

Dr. Ruiz: The director of MLSA and such a humble and funny man.  He is young for his age but so full of life.  There has been more than 20,000 students who have studied in Spain because of him.  Thank you Dr. Ruiz for making my dream of studying in Spain a reality.

3. Las siestas: una de 30-45 minutos después de almuerzo es la mejor manera para descansar especialmente durante esta temporada calorosa

Siestas: 30-45 minute naps after lunch is the perfect way to rest especially during these hot season of weather.

4. Cafe con leche:  He tomado casi 2-3 veces cada día.  Es una necesidad entre las clases y solamente cuesta 90 céntimos en la cafeteria.

Coffee with milk: I probably drank it at least 2-3 times day.  It's a necessity between classes and only costs 90 cents in the cafeteria.

5. Las caminatas: Extrañaré las caminatas a las clases con mis compañeras y los paseos por la tarde explorando Madrid.  No necesitas un gimnasio porque Madrid es su propio gimnasio urbano.

The walks:  I will miss the walks to class with my classmates and the walks in the afternoon exploring Madrid.  You do not need a gym since Madrid is its own urban one.

6. El Parque Retiro: Ha sido my parque favorito.  Podría ir allí cada día para caminar y descansar.  ¡Es muy hermoso!

Retiro Park: That has been my favorite park.  I could go there every day to walk and rest.  It's just so beautiful!

7. Asturias:  Es uno de los lugares más bellos y relajantes en España.  Su topografía es tan diversa y el clima es perfecto.  Me sueña de mi estado natal de Kentucky.  Los mariscos, especialmente el pulpo fue el mejor que he comido en mi vida.

Asturias:  It is one of the most gorgeous and relaxing places in Spain.  It's topography is so diverse and the weather is perfect.  It reminds me so much of Kentucky.  The seafood especially the octopus was the best I have ever eaten in my life.

8. Las tapas: Este costumbre no existe en Los Estados Unidos pero incluso meriendas y bebidas muy ricas acompañadas con conversaciones inolvidables con mis amigos.

         

The tapas:  They really are not snacks but mini meals in between lunch and dinner.  This custom does not exist in the U.S. and includes delicious snacks and drinks accompanied with unforgettable conversations with friends

9. Las clases de ELE: Variedades en Español y La Atención a La Forma y La Gramática En ELE:  Son mis favoritas y he aprendido mucho en esas clases.  Tengo un montón de recursos que voy a implantar en mis clases este año escolar.

The classes of Spanish for non native speaker of Varieties in Spanish and Form and Grammar in ELE were my favorite.  I learned so much and now have a ton of resources that I will implement in my classes this school year.

10. El Alhambra: Uno de los lugares más impresionantes y únicos en el mundo.   Este lugar me deja sin palabras.

The Alhambra:  One of the most impressive and unique places in the world.  These place leaves me speechless!

Mi último fin de semana en España (My last weekend in Spain)

Este fin de semana fue mi primera de quedarme en Madrid.  He disfrutado visitar otras ciudades durante los fines de semana pero fue tiempo para descansar y gozar Madrid.  Fui al barrio de La Plaza de España y caminé alrededor el Palacio real dónde habitaban muchos reyes y reinas de España.  Vi una marcha por un grupo militar afuera del Palacio.

This weekend was my first one for staying in Madrid.  I enjoyed visiting other cities on the weekends but it was time to just relax and enjoy Madrid.  I went to the neighborhood around the Plaza de España and walked around the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) where kings and queens lived for years.  I saw a military group outside the palace giving a demonstration.

I spent Saturday morning in the Plaza Mayor drinking coffee and relaxing with my friends.  This is one of my favorite squares to hang out in.

              

Al resto del fin de semana consistió en comer tapas españoles, visitar el Templo de Deblod, ver las exposiciones de arte y cine al Matadero (un centro cultural en Madrid), comer más tapas y disfrutar la noche Madrileña en La Puerta del Sol.  También fui de compras y finalmente he encontrado un par de espadrilles (alpargatas) que me encantan.  Tuve que terminar la noche con cena a mi Taquería favorita "Tacos al Pastor" cerca de La Puerta del Sol.  Creo que ha sido mi tercera vez comer allí.  😊

The rest of the weekend consisted of eating more Spansh tapas, visiting the Templo de Deblod, viewing exhibitions of art and cinema at the Matadero (a cultural center in Madrid), eating more tapas and enjoying the Madrid nightlife in the Puerta del Sol.  I also went shopping and finally found some espadrilles (also called alpargatas) that I love which our the shoes Spain is most famous for making. Of course, I had to finish the night with dinner at my favorite Mexican taquería "Tacos al Pastor" near Puerta del sol.  I think this has been my fourth time eating there 😊.

La Vida en Madrid Semana 4

¡No puedo creer es mi última semana en Madrid!  Me encantan abmos clases esta semana y estoy aprendiendo mucho.  La mejor parte sobre las clases es la oportunidad para conocer nueva gente.  Unas de mis amigas nuevas son dos profesoras de China (Ji y Jean) y Lauren, una profesora de Nueva York.  Son super amables e inteligentes.

I cannot believe this is my last week in Madrid!  I love both classes this week and I'm learning so much.  The best part about classes is meeting new people.  Some of my new friends are teachers from China Ji and Jean and Lauren, a teacher from New York.  They are all so friendly and intelligent.

El martes decidí explorar los barrios cercanos de mi.  Encontré un mercado local de comida que fue muy interesante.  Había muchos vendedores de cualquier tipo de comida y muchos restuarantes de varios paises hispanohablantes.  Probé una arepa venozolana por la primera vez.

On Tuesday I decided to explore some neighborhoods near the residence hall.  I found an interesting local food market.  There were all kinds of vendors who sold all types of food and there were many restaurants from various Spanish speaking countries.  I tried a Venezuelan arepa for the fist time

Mi día favorito fue miércoles.  Por la tarde, fui al cine para very El Rey Leon con mis amigas.  Fue fabulosa y necesitas verla si ya no has visto.  Después de la película fuimos con otros alumnos a la Casa Encendida que tiene exposiciones de arte muy moderno y erótico sobre el movimiento madrileña en las decadas 70 y 80.  No me gustó pero disfrutó una chai te latte del cafe adentro :)

Celebré la noche con mis amigos tomando tapas y bedias españoles.  Me encanta la comida española.

My favorite day was Wednesday.  In the afternoon I went to see The Lion King with my friends.  It was fabulous and you need to see it if you have not already.  After the movie we met up with some other students to visit the "Casa Encendida" that has some very modern and erotic art expositions from the Madridlanean movement from the 70's and 80.  I did not care for it but enjoyed a chai ta latte from the cafe inside :)   I celebrated that night with my friends sharing tapas and drinks.  I love Spanish food!

Perlora y Candas

Si no se ha notado es evidente que me enamoré con la comunidad autónoma de Asturias. Creo que este lugar es un pequeño vistazo de cielo.  Es verdad que Asturias lo tiene todo: la playa, el campo, los lagos, unas de las montañas más bellas en el mundo y la comida.....¿ya he mencionada la comida?  El norte se conoce por su gastronomía que no nos decepcionó.   Todavía no he comentado sobre los pueblos de Perlora y Candas.  Ambos son lugares para relajar y disfrutar el medioambiente.  Es obvio porque muchos españoles vienen acá para vacación.

Llegamos a las ocho y pico en el pueblo de Perlora donde nos ha quedado por el fin de semana.  Me quedé en una cabaña que era muy cómoda y tranquila.  Cuando llegamos, tuvimos suficiente tiempo para recorrer por la ciudad y encontrar un lugar para cenar.  Anduvimos al pueblo marítimo de Candas, solamente 15 minutes de pie.  Cené con mis amigos a "El Muelle" y "pulpeamos" por la primera vez.... digamos que compartimos cuatros platos diferentes de pulpo.  Pulpo a la gallega, pulpo con gambas, pulpo al ajo y pulpo con al, y pulpo con almejas.  Pedí mejillones para compartir porque es la temporada para ellos.  ¡Qué sabroso! Para cena tuve el arroz con leche quemado, el postre conocido de Asturias.  Pensé que he dejado un poco de mi corazón en Asturias

 If you haven't noticed already it's quite obvious that I have fallen in love with Asturias.  I think this place just might be a little glimpse of what heaven is like.  It's true that Asturias has it all: the beach, the country, the lakes, some of the most beautiful mountains in the world and the food... did I mention the food yet?  The north of Spain is well known all over Europe for its gastronomy and it did not disappoint.  I still haven't mentioned the towns of Perlora and Candas.  Both are places you want to go to just relax and enjoy the environment.  It's obvious why the Spaniards come here for vacation.

We arrived a little after 8pm in the town of Perlora where we stayed for the weekend.  I stayed in a very comfortable and peaceful cabin.  We arrived just in time to explore the city and find a place to eat.  We walked to the maritime city of Candas only fifteen minutes away.  I had dinner with my friends at "El Muelle" (The Pier) and we had a feast on octopus any way you could imagine: octopus a la gallega from Galicia, ocopus with clams, octopus with garlic sauce and octopus with shrimp.  I ordered their specialty which was fresh mussels since they are in season.  Delicious is in understatement!  For dessert I ordered the Asturian speacialty "arroz con leche" creme brulee style.  I think I left a little part of my heart in Asturias.

Oviedo, España y Santa María de Naranca

Antes de llegar a Olviedo, visitamos la iglesia Santa María de Narranco.  Esta iglesia originalmente fue un palacio del Ramiro I del reino Asturiano.  Es el palacio más signficativo de construción del arte prerománico Europeo.  

Olviedo es la capital de Asturias situada en el noreste de España.  Se puede visitar la catedral de Oviedo, de estilo gótico.  También se encuentra la escultura de La Regenta, la protaganista principal de la novela famosa por "El Clarin."  Es una ciudad de mucho carácter.  Tuve suerte por encontrar el mercado El Fontán en el otro lado de la ciudad que solamente está abierto los domingos.  Cuando regresaba a la plaza, paré a mirar un espectaculo de música y baile folklórico de Oviedo.

On our way to Oviedo we stopped and visited the church Santa María de Narranco.  This church originally was a palace for Ramiro I king of the Asturian kingdom.  This palace is one of the oldest constructions of pre-romantic European art.

Olviedo is the capital of Asturias situated in the northeast of Spain.  You can visit the cathedral of Oviedo, of gothic style architecture.  Also you will find the statue of La Regenta, the main character in the famous novel by "El Clarin."  It is a city with a lot of character.  I was lucky to find the Fontán market on the other side of town which is only open on Sundays.  When I was returning to the plaza I watched a group performing folkloric music dance typical to Oviedo.
